ONE SHOT - 1964 Mike Hailwood's amazing speed record
Fantastic snapshot, authored by Nick Nicholls, of the speed record set by Mike Hailwood in 1964 on the Daytona oval. At the controls of an MV AGUSTA 500cc, for one hour, Hailwood achieved an average speed of 233.00 km/h!! This feat eclipsed the 230.00 km/h mark set by Bob McIntyre on a GILERA 350cc at Monza in 1957! This achievement was possible due to the formation of MV AGUSTA having traveled to the USA to compete in the GP in Daytona that was disputed immediately after this feat was achieved. In the GP race, contested using only part of the oval plus a portion of flat road, Mike Hailwood won the 500cc race with two more laps than second place Phil Read in MATCHLESS However, his biggest opponent was Benedicto Caldarella, who was riding a GILERA with an engine very similar to that of the MV AGUSTA, the race had alternation of commanders on several occasions and was only decided when, during the 26th lap, the Argentinean retired with problems in the gearbox!
